About Marcia Smart, Ph.D.

Dr. Marcia Smart is an international speaker and consultant for Leadership Development on Informal Leadership, Personal Empowerment, Women’s Leadership and Positive Change.

With over twenty years of corporate experience, Marcia has worked in dynamic, fast-paced and rapidly-evolving business environments, creating, building and managing teams of top-performers in the High-Tech industry. Her reputation includes being a catalyst for organizational change and sustained performance.

With a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Ph.D in Adult Development and Organizational Learning, Marcia Smart is known as an avid educator and inspiring motivator for all levels of leadership. She is renowned for:

  • Revealing both the tangible and intangible hidden assets
  • Helping people and groups create possibilities
  • Converting those possibilities into reality
  • Possessing an uncanny insight and ability to help uncover roadblocks
  • Transforming roadblocks and fears into motivations and successes

A native of the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Marcia Smart has worked and traveled around the world. She brings a progressive approach to enlightening her community about inspired leadership, organizational and personal development. She has served tenures with both start up businesses and Fortune 100 companies, such as Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems, and has held leadership and management positions in learning and development, information technology, new business development, marketing and customer relations.

Dr. Smart is passionate about improving leadership at all levels. An advocate for building on the positive and maximizing strengths versus focusing on problems and weaknesses, Dr. Smart has developed current training and development models for Positive Change and Appreciative Inquiry.

She holds a position as Adjunct Faculty with the Doctoral Leadership Studies Program at Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, USA.  Here Dr. Smart’s curriculum focuses on Informal Leadership-an example of leadership theory and practice based on a deep, personal sense of purpose, commitment, and power and influence without formal authority. Her Ph.D students enjoy interactive and stimulating discussions and elevate their leadership skills through:

  • Reflecting on their style, focus and purpose of leadership
  • Gaining deeper understanding on organizations as social systems, its structure, climate and culture
  • Scoping, defining and assessing social behaviors of power and influence
  • Having the ability to identify and tap into informal leaders within their group or organizations

Dr. Smart is also an Alumna of the Women’s Campaign School at Yale University, and a ‘Distinguished Toastmaster’-the highest level of achievement in public speaking from Toastmasters International.
